Application and Appointment Guidelines
Who can apply?
Undergraduate and graduate students, administrative and academic staff can benefit from the services provided by the Individual Counseling Center.
Where do I apply?
You can send an e-mail to our address:
icc@sabanciuniv.edu
Applications sent to the e-mail address above will only be evaluated by Individual Counselors (Clinical Psychologists) and the Administrative Assistant. Access or inquiry into the information is otherwise not allowed. Applications are kept absolutely confidential.
Procedure for Making Appointments
• Applications are placed on a waiting list. Individuals must specify available dates and hours for the appointment. Applications are responded to within the same week.
• First appointment is arranged with the first available counselor. Appointments continue with that counselor under regular circumstances.
• Whether the person can receive support from the center, what kind of approach will be more beneficial, the day and time for appointments, and appointment intervals are decided on the first appointment. After mutual evaluation, referral to another specialist or to a different procedure of observation/support might be made if necessary.
• Applications made directly to counselor are not given priority. All applications are referred to the main waiting list.
• If the applicant prefers to work with a particular counselor, s/he must indicate it in the first appointment. This preference is evaluated with the counselor who conducts the first appointment.
• In case of emergency, an intervention outside of the waiting list can be arranged if the individual specifically notifies the center. If an inappropriate or false emergency is called for, the application may be denied or moved to the end of the waiting list.
• Appointments last 45 minutes and are generally scheduled once per week. The appointment length and frequency can be rearranged during the process according to case and need.
• People who cannot make it to the appointment need to notify their counselor of their situation beforehand.
• People who miss their appointments twice in a row lose their appointment day and time. They need to reapply and be placed in the waiting list to get a new appointment.
• Additional time outside of the scheduled appointment time cannot be requested.
• If the person is late for the appointment, the appointment will take place in the remaining time. The appointment is automatically cancelled if the person is late for over half an hour. Additional time may not be requested. In delays caused by the counselor, the delay will be compensated for according to the reasons for delay.
Participation in Group Counseling
• The scheduled day and time for group therapies is announced at the beginning of every term. There is a quota on the number of participants, and group therapies are open to new memberships during the year if the circumstances permit. They are experiential therapies that focus on personal development and interpersonal relationships. Applications to group therapies and other subject-based group counseling sessions are made as specified in the announcements.
o If suggested by the counselor, individuals may switch from individual counseling to group counseling sessions, workshops, and other forms of counseling, or may participate in several forms of counseling simultaneously. However, consent of the counselor is required.
o Individuals may be referred to individual counseling while participating in group counseling sessions. Such referrals can be made by the suggestion of the counselor, as well as by the individual’s own request. Procedures for individual counseling applications apply if the individual makes the request.
• Workshops are structured sessions that concentrate on specific topics as announced in the beginning of the term. Workshops are offered within a limited time frame.
• Seminars, conferences, and panels are presentations given by specialists and instructors of Sabancı University and/or guests, that concentrate on specific topics. They are announced at the beginning of every term.
